a love/hate relationship
dao vs da/sa. that’s why i hate it. it has conditioned me. my muscle memory is now instinctual, and it causes double-tap when i don’t want it to.
i love my glock. it fits right. it responds right. it’s easy to acquire a target. the balance is right. the recoil is right. the whole thing just FEELS right. the problem is, it’s dao. double action only. the hammer is internal, so your thumb never has a chance to use it. because of the way it re-cocks, the pull on the trigger is always the same. it was the same the day i bought it as it is today. there might be a little spring wear, but, for the most part, it never changes.
because it never changes, i’ve learned to take up the slack on my follow up shot. about half a trigger pull for me. that sets me up just right for a very clean follow up shot… with my glock.
the problem with my glock isn’t apparent until i’m NOT shooting it. it only becomes apparent when i shoot my hk. my hk is da/sa. double action/single action.
the hammer is external. on the first shot, you can either cock the hammer with your thumb, or… not. if you do, there is only one more action to take in order to shoot. (that makes two actions completed). if you don’t, the gun STILL goes thru those same two actions…. the first…meh… 3/4 of your trigger pull… is devoted to you not using your thumb… it’s cocking the hammer.
the last 1/4, is the meat and potatoes… letting the hammer fall. this is the second action of the “double action”. and it’s the same whether you used your thumb or not.
NOW is where my favorite gun (that i’m not even shooting) causes problems.
once the trigger is pulled, and the round fires, the slide moves back, and then moves back forward… in a da/sa gun, it no longer is double action. the slide has cocked the weapon. (which means that 3/4 of your trigger pull is gone, leaving only 1/4)
remember how much slack i “take up” with my glock? about half a trigger pull. well, because i’m used to taking up slack for the follow up shot with my glock, and because there’s only 1/4 trigger pull left on my hk, when i tense my finger… the gun fires.
i love my glock. but, i hate the way it makes me look like a surprised jackass when i shoot my hk. most of the time, it’s the first two shots in a new mag, after i’ve reloaded mags. (if i’m at the line with two mags, then when i reload, i can feel the trigger is in for the first shot of the second mag… and i pay attention to it)
but when i’ve come off the line (like to reload mags), and get back on it… my second round is always a surprise. and there was once, when i was so surprised, i pulled again! three shots, only one remotely accurate.
stupid glock. (i love you – don’t be mad)
i love my hk too, but, i think i have to get rid of it, and get a glock in .45. i think that’s howit(ha)s(tobe)done.
